ALL ABOUT SATIN PILLOWCASES

SATIN OR SILK: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

Satin and silk are often confused and the terms are sometimes used interchangeably. They do have some similarities, however, they are distinctly different. In fact, they are not even the same type of thing. Silk is a fiber used to create a material whereas satin is the weave used to create a material.

There are similarities between the two. Silk and satin are both known for their lustrous, glossy appearance and feel. The smoothness of the materials is responsible for the skin and hair benefits discussed below.

When we talk about silk, we are referring to a material made with natural fibres produced by silkworms. You can have a silk material that has a satin weave, but you can also have silk materials with other weaves.

When we talk about satin, we are referring to material made from silk, polyester, rayon, etc, that is produced using a satin weave.

Another difference between them is that satin is a vegan product, while silk, being an animal by-product, is not. In harvesting silk, the cocoon material of the silkworm moth, the silkworms are killed, often by steaming or boiling. There are a few exceptions to this: Ahimsa silk is made using cruelty free methods and is produced small scale in India. BENEFITS FOR YOUR SKIN AND HAIR

There are many, many websites and blogs which describe the benefits of satin and silk pillowcases for our skin and hair.

The main idea is that the smooth, slippery surfaces of silk and satin allow for your hair and skin to easily slip over the fabric, with less tugging and resistance than regular cotton pillowcases.

The lack of friction between the skin and the pillowcase is then thought to lead to fewer wrinkles. (As a stomach sleeper, I LOVE this!)

Allowing our hair to easily slide over the pillowcase helps reduce frizz, letting our hair stay smooth.

As well, silk and satin pillowcases are thought to absorb less of the expensive serums and creams we put on our faces before bed. ( I need them more than my pillow does!) The more our skincare products stay on our faces, the better.

Aside from the skin and hair benefits of satin and silk pillowcases, there is simply the luxurious feel of using these pillowcases!

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR SATIN PILLOWCASE

As with all pillowcases, satin pillowcases should be changed nightly (every second night at the most). This helps keep your skin clear and free of blemishes.

To wash your satin pillowcase, handwash or machine wash using the delicate cycle in cold water. To dry, either hang or tumble dry on low heat.
