TIPS FOR COLD WEATHER SKINCARE
Brrrr, it’s cold out there! Many people question how to take care of their skin in the cooler months. Cooler temperatures can cause havoc with our skin. For instance, those people who suffer from eczema can find that during fall and winter their skin cracks more easily and more often.
First and foremost, skin needs to be protected from the sun all year long. Cloudy skies and cold temperatures often lead to the assumption that sun protection is not necessary. However, the suns rays can still damage our skin even on cloudy and overcast days. A sun protection product is essential on exposed skin areas, such as the face!
Basic skincare routines - cleansing, toning, exfoliating, moisturizing - should still be followed in the cooler weather. However, you may find that your skin is dryer during these months. Gentle facial cleansers and exfoliators with no harsh ingredients can be beneficial. Moisturizer is super important - you can try to use your moisturizer more often or switch to an oil-based moisturizer, but be sure to choose one that is noncomedogenic to avoid clogged pores.
The rest of the body will also benefit from moisturizers. Hands in particular require extra moisture. A product which produces a protective barrier, such as petroleum jelly, can help protect the skin on the hands.
Other tips include wearing gloves when outside, consider using a humidifier to increase humidity levels, and avoiding hot showers and baths.
